UCanUse Localized Topics System Minimize

Multi-lingual Information System for DotNetNuke systems versions 4.5 and above

Software UCanUse©

UCanUse Help System

Version 2

Use this powerful module for any information you want to display! And it's multi-lingual capable!

  • 3 ways to display Information to Users

1. Open any web page in a new, smaller browser

2. Display on the same page the user is on
   (expands into the same page)

3. Open a small window and user never leaves your page

  • "On-Screen" display lets users click to dismiss the information panel, saving screen real estate.
The system keeps track of each individual user's preference for each screen you provide.

  • Permanent Dismiss button in "On-Screen" display allows user to remove the content from the page permanently for that user only

  • Use CSS and text/HTML to design any content you want

  • Use Flash for video or audio

  • If you choose to open up the Topic in a separate window, you can use javascript and anything else that can be used in a html page.

  • Topic List view lets you choose which Topics you want to display in a list format in all the places you want. Users launch topics right from the topic list.  Place several lists on the same page with different subjects.

  • Skin Object operates in 3 modes to give you the ability to launch topics directly from containers and skins throughout your web site or portal.   Localize any text you want anywhere!

The UCanUse© Localized Topics System lets you provide customized help topics and other content throughout your DotNetNuke web site without permanently cluttering up the screen space too much. The system is capable of supporting multiple languages. Topics that you design are stored in the database as normal text/HTML so you can use all the features you want to use such as flash presentations, images, and links to other files and pages.

You can present any content you want, and you can customize the look and feel in any way you want.

The Topic Launcher can act in different ways depending on how you define the Topic it hosts. You can defined a Topic to automatically open and appear as a module on the page, or you can set it to open in a javascript pop up window. In that case the Topic Launcher will simply appear as a rollover icon button. The tool tip for the button will be the title of the Topic.

You can use this module in conjunction with the UCanUse© Membership Services Suite and the UCanUse© Delegated Administration Suite to generate new pages, pre‐populated with Topic Launcher modules mapped to DotNetNuke modules and UCanUse© Page Types.  Visit www.ActivityCenterSoftware.com for more information about this powerful new system.

Want to provide help and other informaiton to specific users based on their Security Roles?  You can with this module.

Add a Topic Skin Object to your containers, and design topics to explain how to use various moudles in your site.  If the skin object finds a match for the module in the container, it will display its rollover icon button and the user will have context-sensitive information right there.

Change the rollover image icons to be anything you want.

More information about this is supplied in the downloadable User Manual. This User Manual will explain all the features and how to use the UCanUse© User Help System.

Here's a screen shot of an example of a Topic displayed on the same page...

In this example, the screen is set to display on the page without the user pressing the Help icon. Here’s what the Help Topic Launcher looks like when it opens on the page with the help text displayed.

UCanUse Help System Text on Same Page

You can supply your own images for the normal and the rollover buttons. When you press the button, the topic dissappears and a rollover icon button will appear.  Just press the button to open it again whenever you want.  You can also set a Topic to not open immediately, so users would just see the rollover image buton when they first see it.

You can supply your own Help buttons, or hide them altogether.

If you check the "Never Open in Same Window Again" button, then the screen will close, the rollover image icon will appear and the next time you press the button, it will open in a separate, smaller window instead of on the same screen.

 Sample Help Pop Up

However if you check the "Close Permanently" checkbox also when you dismiss the Topic, then the topic will be removed and you will never see the rollover image button again. This effectively 'removes' the module from the page for the user who closes it permanently. Other users will still see the screen or button as normal. These features work on a user-by-user basis.

You can also use a link to another web page and display help or other information that way.

Topic Skin Object Included!

Place the Topic Skin Object in skins or containers to provide information and content for any purpose whatsoever.  The Topic Skin Object operates in 3 modes:

1) Topic Mode

Just set the Topic you want to display in the skin declaration. When the user presses the button, that is the Topic they will see.

2) Module Mode

Just set ModuleMode = "true" and map a Topic to that type of module.  A small icon will be displayed wherever you place the skin object and when the user clics it, localized content for that module will be presented.  In this way you can provide specific information for every instance of a specific type of module on your web site.

3) Page Mode

Place the skin object on a page and if you have mapped a Topic to that page, the button will appear and users can click it to get the specific information you want them to have on that page.

Display Help Topics by Security Role

Each Help Topic can be controlled by Security Roles.  This allows you to present different content to different security roles.  People will only see the Help Topics you want them to see.

Think of all the things you can do with this module!

Likely Scenarios:

  • You want to provide information about one of your modules, but don't want to clutter up screen space doing so
    What Do You Do?

  • Design a Topic with the included Topic Editor and the Topic Skin Object to the container of the module you want to provide help for.The tool tip over the rollover button will display the Title you entered for the Topic.  When the user clicks the icon, a small window with your content will be launched.  The user will never leave your page.

  • You want to provide information to the user and make sure it is seen, but you don't want to take up page space forever after they have seen it.
    What Do You Do?

  • Design the Topic with the included Topic Editor and set it to display automatically on the same page. It will initially open until the user decides to dismiss it temporarily. Then it will appear as a small rollover button, there for whenever the user wants to see it again.  If the user decides to dismiss the topic permanently, they will never see the rollover button for that Topic again.  This can be reversed by the Site Admin or by the member of a designated Security Role.

  • You want to provide information to the user and not show any of the "close Topic" controls.
    What Do You Do?

  • Design the information screen with the included Topic Editor and set it to display automatically on the same page. Choose the setting to hide the close controls. It will open every time the user visits the page.

Using this module creatively will open up all sorts of new multi-lingual possibilities on your web sites and portals!

Here is an example of the searchable Topic List:

UCanUse Help Topics List

You can place multiple Topic lists on the same page and around your site. Place several on a "Help Page" which different categories of Help topics in each list.

You can use this module for any information you want to display to the user, don't limit yourself to just Help Topics!

Provide localized "How To" videos with Camtasia or provide any other information to your valuable Users easily!   The "Duplicate Topic" button lets you easily duplicate a topic and use Google Translate or some other tool to translate the content.  When the suer visits the page, the current culture tralsation of the topic will be displayed.  If the current culture is not found, the translation designated as the Default Culture will be displayed instead.
